Legs of a Salmon

A face only a Mother could love!

Do you have the legs of a Salmon? I think not, no one does. Salmon don't have legs, right? But they are runners for sure. They have been breaking lines and straightening hooks since 1967 in the Great Lakes. That's the year the Michigan DNR planted them in the Great Lakes to control the alewife population.

Known for there ferocious strikes and a screaming drag as they take you for a ride up river. Anglers love them for the sport and they sure are tasty as well. I wish they were like a Steelhead. Instead of the salmon dying they could live again after the spawn and drop back to the big water. God wanted them to die after the spawn.

Hatchery vs wild fish can be a touchy subject with some people. I believe in both actually. Some people don't want any stocked fish of any kind. In Michigan the stocked Salmon have created one hell of a fishery and economy. I believe there has to be a happy medium for both when it comes to Steelhead, but that's another post for another day.

Matt Moisley with a PIG!

I know my brothers on the West Coast that subscribe to my ramblings know all about the Salmon and hatchery vs wild. But here in Michigan this fishery may be healthy in a lot of ways, but in other ways it's not. I have been worried about the Salmon fishery in the Great Lakes for the past few years now.

Will we have another crash, like the one on Lake Huron? I sure hope not. That part of the state has never recovered economically.

The Sport fishery in the Great Lakes alone contributes $4 billion dollars a year to the economy. That was with a B in case you missed that. It's a huge tourist attraction and a way of life here in and around the Great Lakes region. Not mention just an awesome game fish to catch.

So this weeks post is dedicated to the mighty King Salmon. As salmon season approaches and heats up. Help the fish out will ya? Report the snaggers and poachers. Put a fish back and for God sake leave them black dead boots alone. (Black dead boots: A Dying Salmon)

Thanks for stopping by and while your at work thinking about fishing here is a few videos to enjoy. I leave you with this today:

Down on the FARM

Down on the farm can mean alot of things to alot of people. To me the first thing that comes to mind is, the good old fashioned farm pond. These are private places with no fishing pressure and if the fish are in the mood, the fishing can be epic.

Now when I say epic, I mean lots of fish and just plain fun. My son and I visited my buddies farm and were allowed to fish a few different ponds they own. Luckily for us the ponds were deep enough and had aerators. So there were no Polar Vortex casualties to the fish population, like everywhere else across the Midwest. Wow was the fishing good. We lost count after 80 fish, no joke. No giant fish were caught that day. Nothing that will make a magazine cover or anything. The action was fast and furious and lot's of fun. That's what it's all about for the kids.

I was armed with my 5 wt fly rod fishing small poppers and black spiders. My son Jake was just fishing a 1/32 ounce Mister Twister. He ended up with the biggest bass of the day. Which made me proud and made him happy, for he had bragging rights. The smile on his face made my day.

Too me, taking a kid fishing is so important these days. To tell you the truth, I can't believe fishing, and the outdoors is even in competition with video games. When I was a kid I lived outdoors. Hey what do I know, I'm a old guy right?

After fishing we got to shoot real guns at the range. I even let him shoot my 300 ultra mag. I had to make sure this gun was still on for my trip out west. FYI the photo does not show it, but he was wearing safety glasses and foam ear plugs. We wrapped up the day with a steak dinner. I know you want be my kid right?

No product reviews or tech tips this week to share. Just trying to inspire those Dad's out there to spend some time with their children. Father and Son this weekend was what its all about. At the end of your journey we call life we all end up down stream. Life is short, enjoy every day. Especially with your kids they are your most important legacy.

I leave you with this today.

A child’s world is fresh and new and beautiful, full of wonder and excitement. It is our misfortune that for most of us that clear-eyed vision, that true instinct for what is beautiful, is dimmed and even lost before we reach adulthood.

Don't deny your child of this and put your glasses on and see what they see again.

Life is good! Thanks again for your support.

Fish on!

Dam YOU!

Well hello there my FISHY Friends! I hope all is well? Have you have been soul fishing on your favorite piece of water lately? I sure hope so.

The movement has begun on dam removal projects here in the US. We still have a long way to go but the train is moving. Thanks to social media, films and caring people dams are being removed. Please remember you can make a difference where ever you are, you just have to get involved. This weekend along with Metro West Steelheaders, M.U.C.C. and Clinton Watershed Council we will be volunteering to do a river clean up project the Clinton river this Saturday. I hope to see you there.

It makes me so happy to see videos like the one below and on the Internet where dams are being removed all over our country. We all benefit from cold, clean water. We need water ways where fish can thrive and survive and spawn. For those of you out there, around the world that have this same vision as I do, CHEERS to you and all that you do.

I hope the video or this post just might inspire you to get involved in some way. And don't forget to spread the word on social media on any conservation issue, its free, easy and very effective. Stay fishy my friends!

I leave you with this.

I choose to listen to the river for a while, thinking river thoughts, before joining the night and the stars!
Dam you let the rivers flow FREE!

Thanks for your support and feel free to comment as always.

Kind Regards.

Roger

Night fishing for Hawg Trout

As the hex hatch comes to an end that doesn't mean your night moves or fishing is over. When I say night moves we think of Bob Seger and his song but were talking Mousing! This has become a very popular tactic in and around the Midwest. I'm surprised at how many people were unaware that trout eat mice. More and more anglers are getting the bug. I mean mouse!

This weekend there will be many anglers gearing up and fishing well into the night for those big hungry trout. This post is dedicated to you and we wish you luck here at S & M. We love success and some fish porn, so if you catch a nice trout this weekend send us your photo. We will post here and make your fish a star.

Nothing fancy or special about the technique just beat the banks and put your time in. You just might be rewarded with the biggest trout of your life. Be safe on the river and get it done this weekend, the night is yours!

"The trout do not rise in the cemetery, so you better do your fishing while you are still able."

Stay Fishing my FRIENDS!

Fishing, Fireworks and the Fourth of July

I thank GOD I'm FREE and I live in this country. Even though we have allot of problems right now and everyone has a opinion on Iraq, our border's, health care and the big one the economy. We all can agree on one thing. We are still so blessed to live in this country.

Fishing, Fireworks and the Fourth go hand in hand here in America. Don't worry I did not forget grilling. What a awesome weekend we all enjoy in this country. Sorry I do not have some fancy destination or some expensive trip to share. Just stayed around the house this year and enjoyed time with my family.

Of course we barbecued all weekend and ate very good! Most importantly I spent time with my family, that's what matters most to me.  I guess I wanted this post to remind everyone how thankful we all should be. Let's not forget to thank our VETS! That's why were free because of their sacrifice.

As our countries Independence celebration ends. We must brace ourselves for another work week. Us Americans are a hard working people and I hope you had a chance to get out have some fun this past weekend. The weather was absolutely perfect here in the Midwest.

I leave you with this quote from Dwight Eisenhower:

"Freedom has its life in the hearts, the actions, the spirit of men and so it must be earned and refreshed-else like a flower cut from its life-giving roots, it will wither and die"
