El Nino Steelhead

El Ni·ño
el ˈnēnyō/
noun
1.   an irregularly occurring and complex series of climatic changes affecting the equatorial Pacific region and beyond every few years, characterized by the appearance of unusually warm, nutrient-poor water off northern Peru and Ecuador, typically in late December.

El Nino is an abnormal weather pattern that is caused by the warming of the Pacific Ocean near the equator, off the coast of South America. Every few years, the winds shift and the water in the Pacific Ocean gets warmer than usual.

We had the worst El Nino in 1997-98 and things are already shaping up to be the strongest on record. Now this will have many effects around the country depending on what part of the country you live in. This post is going to be concentrating on the Great Lakes Region and what effects it will have on our upcoming winter. This years is nicknamed Bruce Lee.

If history repeats itself the Great Lakes Region will experience a warmer winter and less snowfall this year in 2015 and 16. After the past two winters of 2013 and 14 that is a welcomed sight for the Steelhead Fisherman. We saw rivers that were actually froze up and  not fishable for months. This all sounds like good news for us but others around the country will not like the effects.

Most of Lower Michigan will have a 40% chance temperatures will be warmer than normal. That also means that there is only a 33% chance of normal Temps. Along with a 27% chance of below normal Temps. Believe it or not the farther North and West you go here in Michigan I predict warmer temps this year.

Don't believe me look up the El Nino Winters of 1972-73, 82-83 and 97-98. Those winters averaged 32.5-33.9 degrees above freezing. That's music to the winter steelheaders ears. To be honest it's up to God and Mother Nature.

Only time will tell this coming winter on my predictions, but if I'm right remember you heard it here first. If I'm wrong take me off your Christmas Card list, ha-ha.

Feel free to comment and share.

Take care everyone and thanks for your support.

Get out on the water and enjoy yourself the salmon are running!

A man that Flys

Well when I was a kid my brother and I were big wrestling fans. One of our favorites was Jimmy Super Fly Snuka. A man that would fly off the very top rope or a 15 foot cage fence. We tuned in every week and were glued to the TV set. We both always wished we could go see a wrestling match.

Today I saw this video called "Superfly" and I said whoa! Jimmy does look like he once did. Well neither do any of us. Father time is not on our sides. The beauty of having your own blog is you can say what you want, it's yours. And although this has nothing to do with how to fish or the latest fishing product. It does remind me of how fast time goes. That's why I try to do what I love as much as I can and you should too. Because we're all going to end up down stream my friends.

Don't know if Jimmy is still wrestling because he loves it or because he has too to survive really? But even he will succumb to old age and have to one day give it up. His top rope days are over. That's one thing I hate to think about, but it's inevitable for all of us. I included a short video on Jimmy for you to watch.

So the moral of today's post is to remind you go fishing, you should fish as much as you can and enjoy your life everyday.

One day were on the top rope, the next were on the second rope and then we can't really fly anymore. Don't believe me? Just ask Jimmy the Superfly.

Tight lines, screaming drags and bent rods forever!

January Tough Fishing

January can be a tough month for chrome sometimes. This can really be true if we have not seen any new fish into the system. Shelf ice and temperature, think about it for a minute. If your river got a few different runs of fish in the Fall. So they have been there or even possibly left or moved up river, etc... Anglers have been beating on the fish for a few months. Some even harvest the hatchery fish. The water temp has plummeted, etc... How about the fish having sore mouths?

Doesn't mean you should not go. Just means you might have to work a little harder to find some players and get them to bite. Once you find them, next find what they want and game on.Better news is coming Spring is around the corner for some people and that means new fresh chrome fish to be had!

Hang in there my fishy friends better days are ahead. Below is a few photos from trip to the Manistee this past weekend. A few fish were caught but we had to work really hard to get them. I will be speaking again this month come on out it's free. Have a great and safe weekend. I hope you get some fishing in. I know I will be on the river just maybe I will see you out there.

Take care everyone and thanks for your continued support.

Tight Lines.

It's COLD Outside!

Seasons Greetings Steelhead Junkies

I hope you had a great Holiday? And Santa brought you all the fishing gear you wanted. As we bring in the New Year 2015 we wish you Happy Holidays and a Happy New Year!

Going fishing this weekend? It's cold outside, right?

They say Cold /KOLD/ is:
Lacking affection or warmth of feeling; unemotional.
It's synonyms: unfriendly, inhospitable, forbidding, cool, frigid

I have a few reminder words for you:

Wool
Polar Fleece
Neoprene
Polypropylene
Ployester
Nylon
Goretex
Merino Wool
Goose Down
Hand Warmers
Thermos with a HOT beverage

Who needs a Thermometer? That’s what nipples are for! Just kidding folks. If you dress in layers and with today's modern technologies and improvements in clothing you will be surprised how conformable you can be on the river in cold weather. But you must use your head and be safe. Always carry extra gloves in case your hands get wet. I carry 2 extra sets in my pack. I plan on catching fish, you should too.

The rivers are not frozen yet and we have very little snow around the Great Lakes region. Round 2 of the Polar Vortex has not shown up yet. No matter if you Pin to Win, Spey to Play, Strip Streamers and even pull plugs. Why stay inside get out for a bit and fish. The winter is one of my favorite times to be on the water. Crowds, what crowds? Exactly, get my point!

On the River during the Winter you find solitude without the loneliness. It's just an awesome time to be on the river.

They say it’s gonna be COLD outside this week and only die hards will be on the water. Call me what you will, crazy, die hard, idiot etc... This is my soul fishing time. Thanks again everyone for your continued support this year. I hope 2015 is a better year for us all and may all your steelhead dreams come true.

I'll be  ON THE RIVER somewhere chasing steelhead!

Pawhammer Banjo

Today's post is dedicated to man's Best Friend. I have a bird dog, a German short hair named Mandy. A word of advice you have to be careful what you say about a man's wife and kids, but you had better be DARN careful what you say about his bird dog!

There's something about a bird dog and his master. There's a special bond they share with love for one another and the game they pursue. My dog is getting some miles on her just like me. But we suit each other just fine thank you. I need to get her out bird hunting more. I must be feeling guilty or something. I have not been around much lately. Cheers to you if your a bird dog lover!

No matter what's going on I will find her at the front door waiting for me when I get home every night or from a long trip. Our God has made us many wonderful things to enjoy. Even an old bird dog named Mandy.

Below you find some Hunting and Fishing photos from over the past couple weeks. The Buck is big but the fish are small but I love them all. As you can see I'm truly blessed and I hope you are too? Thanks again for your continued support. May you have a wonderful Thanksgiving and get outdoors its a great place to be!

Regards

Untitled

As Salmon season heats up and Steelhead on there way this Fall the combat fishing will begin. I came across this video and I like what this kid says. This is why I love the Winter Time.
See his words and video below!

Mission of Film: 1) To show the fly fishing community what winter steelheading in the great lakes is all about. 2) To give hope to those who are currently fall combat fishing there... better times with less people are on the way! 3) Remind everyone that RWP did make a fly fishing short movie called "No Off-Season" which will be released on our website this December. Making the Film: I had a dream about this song and a sequence of some of our footage behind it. I woke up the next day and turned on my computer and put it together, more or less, just like my dream. This is my first go at editing a music video style project. Music : "When the Tigers Broke Free" by Pink Floyd.
